Calgary, Alberta
The delightful Canadian city of Calgary is located in the southern Canadian state of Alberta, in the foothills. It is a junction of railways and roads. An important industrial, commercial, and transport center of the country. The state is named after Queen Victoria’s fourth daughter, Princess Louise Caroline of Alberta. The capital is Edmonton. Symbols of the province: flower – wild rose; bird – great horned owl; colors – blue and gold.
It is worth noting that of all the cities of the Canadian prairies, Calgary has the most interesting location. It is located on a hill, at the point where it passes into the Rocky Mountains. The city is crossed by two rivers – Bow and Elbow. Calgary itself covers an area of 717 square kilometers, and together with the suburbs of 5.083 square kilometers. Calgary is named after Calgary Bay – a bay in Scotland.
Of considerable interest is the climate of the city. Numerous mountains are the reason for Calgary’s rather dry climate. Summers are mild, with an average temperature of 15 to 30 C in July. The average temperature in winter is from -16 to -4 C. Frosts are softened by a wind called “shinuk”, translated from Indian – the destroyer, or – ” snow-eater ” – a warm and dry wind from the Rocky Mountains, which is a few hours raises the air temperature by more than 20 degrees, turning winter into spring.
The city can be proud of its clean air. According to official data, it ranks 31st in terms of living standards among 118 major cities in the world.
Even from afar, you can see the center of Calgary – the skyscrapers of Downtown. Here, mainly, there are various offices of large companies, expensive shops, many restaurants, and hotels – that is, it is the business center of the city.
Sometimes it is an almost unreal, semi-fantastic sight-especially in the evening because all the skyscrapers are brightly lit all night long. You can’t say that it is a “stone jungle” without sunlight, as they say about some other cities – to be honest, it makes a rather friendly impression. Moreover, the mirrored walls of skyscrapers often reflect the clear blue sky, so it looks cheerful, bright, and elegant.
The main part of the city – low houses, buried among the trees. According to official data, Calgary ranks 12th in terms of living standards among 118 major cities in the world. Despite the industrial bias, its distinctive feature is clean air. Friendly citizens, almost complete absence of transport problems, and the lowest crime rate in the country this is the face of the city today.
Main attractions:
Calgary has a rich and diverse cultural life. The city has about 500 churches and religious organizations, many theaters, cinemas, opera, ballet, museums, exhibition halls, cultural centers. There are all conditions for active recreation and entertainment: sports centers and clubs for all sports, a racetrack, amusement parks in the city and outside the city, a zoo, which is considered one of the best in Canada, as well as a huge number of cafes and restaurants where you can get acquainted with the cuisine from around the world, for lovers of nightlife – clubs and casinos.
“Heritage Park” is a huge open-air museum of history, which covers an area of 27 hectares. It presents the history of Calgary in the late 19th and early 20th century, until 1914, that is, from the time when the fort was built to the time when Calgary became a fairly large city in the province of Alberta. The gate and fence of the park itself are made as in the days when the Canadian mounted police built their forts to control and maintain order among the settlers and Indian tribes.
In 1987, in preparation for the Olympic Games, a powerful gas torch was installed at the top of the 191-meter Calgary Tower, built-in 1968. The Olympic Flame burned brightly throughout the Olympics. Now this fire is lit on Canada Day and other important days. And if the Calgary Flames team plays “at home” and wins – a torch is always lit on the tower. Before Christmas, the upper part of the tower is decorated with garlands of colorful light bulbs.
Unique attractions include the Glenbow Museum and the second largest zoo in Canada.
