Zürich is a city in northern Switzerland. The capital of the German-speaking canton of Zurich and the administrative center of the district of the same name.

With a population of 478,000 (as of the end of 2020), Zurich is the largest city in the country. More than 1.3 million people live within the agglomeration.

It is located on the shore of Lake Zurich at the source of the Limmat River, in the valley between the Utliberg and Zürichberg mountains.

Zurich is ranked as a global city and is the largest financial center in Switzerland, home to the headquarters of many insurance companies and banks, including the international UBS and Credit Suisse, the Swiss Stock Exchange, and one of the headquarters of the Swiss central bank. Major research center: university and higher technical school. In 2019, Zurich ranked second in the world in terms of quality of life and fourth in the list of the most expensive cities in the world.

The Romano-Gothic cathedrals of Grossmunster, Fraumunster, and St. Peter’s Church tower over the historic center. On the banks of the Limmat is the town hall, built-in 1694-1698.

The town was first mentioned in 929. In the XIII—XVII centuries it was an imperial city. In 1351, he joined the Swiss Union. In the XVI century, it became the center of the Reformation led by Zwingli. In the 2nd half of the XIX century, it became the financial center of the country.

Zurich is located at the source of the Limmat River at the northern end of Lake Zurich, about 30 kilometers north of the Alps. The Limmat crosses the historic center of Zurich (Old Town) and then turns west. Zurich is surrounded by forested mountains, including the Zürichberg (to the east of the city) and the Utliberg, which has an observation tower overlooking the city. In the historic center of Zurich, the River Zil flows into the Limmat. The area of the city is 91.88 km2, of which 4.1 km2 falls on the water area of Lake Zurich.

Zurich is the largest city in Switzerland. As of March 2021, the population according to official data was 398,521, of which 127,535 (about 31%) were foreigners. Among foreigners, most of the citizens of Germany (26,925), Italy (14,311), Serbia, and Montenegro (12,132). 18,427 residents are citizens of African and Asian states. The population of Zurich, together with its suburbs (the Zurich agglomeration), according to the results of the 2020 census was 1.09 million people.

The Canton of Zurich is German-speaking, the official language is German. According to data for 2020, for 74.3% of the city’s residents, German is the first language, followed by Italian (4.8 %).
