The Interrupted Goode’s Homolosine Projection, also known as the Goode’s Homolosine Equal-Area Projection, is a map projection that seeks to minimize distortions in size and shape when representing the entire world on a flat surface. It was developed by John Paul Goode in 1923 and later refined by Waldo R. Tobler in the 1960s.
This projection is considered a compromise projection, as it attempts to balance the preservation of area (equal-area) with reduced distortion of shapes and distances. Unlike many other map projections, the Goode’s Homolosine Projection does not maintain a single continuous map surface but instead “interrupts” the projection to create several segments. These segments are then fit together to form a more accurate representation of the world.
The projection divides the world into segments, typically six or eight, which are placed in a manner that minimizes distortion. The main feature of the Goode’s Homolosine Projection is its equal-area property, which means that areas on the map represent the corresponding areas on the Earth’s surface accurately. This makes it suitable for thematic maps and studies that involve comparing areas and distribution of phenomena.
However, like all map projections, the Goode’s Homolosine Projection still introduces distortions in terms of shape, direction, and distance. The interruption lines may cause some discontinuity in the representation of features. It is primarily used for world maps where maintaining equal-area properties is more critical than preserving other aspects like shapes or angles.
