Jaffa or Yafo is the old city of Tel Aviv. This is the complete opposite of the noisy and young Tel Aviv. Here you can wander through the narrow ancient streets and study history.

Jaffa has everything for a relaxing holiday: cozy restaurants, beautiful seascapes, and interesting monuments.

Settlements on the territory of Jaffa appeared in the XVIII century BC. e. It is believed that the first settlers were the Egyptians. For defense, they set up defensive fortifications. Later, Jaffa came under Roman rule. Pompey, Julius Caesar, Mark Antony, Octavian Augustus, and Herod the Great ruled here. During Roman rule, the city flourished.

But Jaffa could not stay afloat — during the Jewish War, the city was destroyed. The restoration of the city was not long in coming. Soon the power passed to Vespasian. He completely rebuilt the city and named it Flafia Joppa.

In the seventh century AD, Jaffa came under the rule of the Arabs. The city is losing its importance. Trade no longer takes place here, and the fortress no longer performs its functions. Only the port continues to operate in the city. But soon the port falls into disrepair. The port retained only one function — through it, pilgrims got to the Holy Land.

After 5 centuries, the crusaders come to the city and everything changes radically. The new government expels the local Arabs and Jews, and the city becomes the capital of the County of Jaffa and Ascalon. During this period, active construction begins.

The suffering of the city did not end there: in 1191, Richard the Lionheart captured the city, and in 1268, Sultan Baybars I completely destroyed Jaffa. For the 4th century, the city disappears from the map and does not accept ships. During the Napoleonic Wars, the city was captured by the French.

Now Tel Aviv and Jaffa are one city. They were united in the 1950s. The merger did not affect the appearance of the city in any way. It has maintained its atmosphere of calm.

In recent years, Jaffa has become a tourist destination and the abode of Israeli bohemia. Here you can find many workshops, art boutiques, galleries, theaters, and museums. A huge number of artists, sculptors, and musicians live on 1 sq.m.

Arriving in Tel Aviv, tourists on the first day go to Jaffa. But it is not so easy to walk through the ancient streets — take a map with the sights with you.

In Jaffa, there are “must-see” that tourists seek to see and capture in their pictures. The city has a quarter of zodiac signs. Wandering through the streets, you can find your sign and take a picture with it. There is a legend among tourists-touch your sign and good luck will come to you.

The floating orange tree is a tourist attraction that every tourist has on Instagram. The sculptor Ron Morin created this art object in 1993, but never explained its meaning. At the moment, there are two versions. According to one version, the floating tree symbolizes the Jewish people. The Jews had no land of their own and were scattered all over the world. Even without their land, the people continued to live and create.

In Jaffa, you can find ancient churches: the Church of the Apostle Peter and the Catholic Church of the Apostle Peter. The Apostle Peter is an important figure of the city. It was here that the apostle had a vision and here he raised up the righteous Tabitha.

Don’t forget that Jaffa is a sea city. From time immemorial, the port has been an important component of the city. Today, the port is only a tourist attraction. Locals and tourists come to the port to sit in the restaurant, walk through the exhibition halls and go to the shops. If you want to “go to sea” — boats, pleasure boats, and yachts are waiting for you on the shore.
