Rome — “Caput Mundi“, the head of the world, as they said in ancient times has been the capital for more than 2000 years. In ancient times, it ruled the world as the main city of the Roman Empire, in the Middle Ages it became the capital of the Papacy and the center of Christianity, and today it is the capital of the Italian Republic and the Lazio region. Rome was and remains one of the most visited cities in the world.

There are many legends, legends, sayings, and phrases about the Eternal City. One popular cliche is the unshakable claim that Rome stands on seven hills: the Capitol, the Palatine, the Quirinal, the Viminal, the Esquiline, the Caelum, and the Aventine. Each of the hills has its own long history and significance for the city. For example, the Palatine is the historical center of the city, from this place Rome began, the Quirinal is the state center of the city (here is the presidential Palace, which is one of the most beautiful in Rome and in the whole country), the Capitoline Hill, and in particular, the Venice Square is the “tourist” center of the city. Within the limits of Rome, there is a sovereign state-the Vatican – the center of the Catholic world, the residence of the Pope, and the treasury of unique works of art collected by the Catholic Church.

Another legend says that the founders of Rome are the twin brothers Romulus and Remus, fed by a wolf, later found and raised by the shepherd Faustulus. Having completed his long work on the foundation of the city, the organization of the state, and the army, Romulus ascended to heaven and became the Patron God, called Quirinus.

Despite the burden of thousands of years of history, the Eternal City lives and develops dynamically: the famous Colosseum is adjacent to the metro station, the ancient Baths have been transformed into functioning temples, hippodromes and beautiful parks around the villas are used by modern Italians for morning runs and family holidays.

Rome is magnificent in everything. Discerning tourists will appreciate the luxury of Roman hotels-palazzi, where European monarchs and world celebrities stayed, and fashionable restaurants that are famous for their culinary delights and wine lists.

There is no other city in the world that has preserved so many historical monuments of all eras. Everywhere you can feel the traces of the history of more than 30 centuries: birth, prosperity, decline, and rebirth. Rome is like a huge museum with a unique collection of architectural monuments and sculptures that are familiar from childhood.

It is recommended to start exploring the ancient city with a visit to the most beautiful square in Venice. Venice Square is an important intersection point of Rome’s transport routes. The main attention is drawn primarily to the pompous monument to the unifying King of Italy, Victor Emmanuel II.

Take a walk along the pavement of the ancient Roman forum (“a place for trade and general meetings”), wherein ancient times all the most important events for the city were held: court cases were heard and public ceremonies were held, festivals were held and executions were carried out, laws were announced and new rulers were elected. The Forum space itself was an oblong square (91.4 meters long and 61 meters wide).

The most beautiful view of the Forum is from the Tarpeian cliffs of Capitoline Hill. In ancient times, the Capitoline Square was a Roman acropolis with the main temple, built in 509 BC, and dedicated to the supreme god Jupiter. The square in its current form was designed by Michelangelo in 1536. In the center of it stands an equestrian statue of Marcus Aurelius.

You will also enjoy a beautiful view of the once magnificent, now turned into a pile of ruins of the palace buildings of the Forum from the observation deck in the Farnese Gardens, which were laid out in the XVI century on the Palantine Hill – perhaps the most ancient botanical garden in the world.

One of the symbols of modern Rome is the Colosseum. The oval four-story building, built around 80, could accommodate 80 thousand people at the same time. Until 405, gladiator fights were held in the Colosseum, and until 526, gladiator fights with wild animals were held. The picture of ancient Rome is complemented by the Pantheon, the Imperial Forums, the famous Roman baths, and the legendary Catacombs.

Medieval Rome lies around the squares of Campo de ‘ Fiori and Navona. The typical Italian market opens every morning in Piazza Campo dei Fiori, and there is also a monument to Giordano Bruno, who was burned at the stake in 1600. The main attraction of Navona Square is the fountain of the “Four Rivers” with allegorical figures of the Danube, Ganges, Nile, and La Plata.

Renaissance Rome is especially charming: the famous Trevi fountains, Triton, Tortoises, numerous churches and cathedrals, luxurious palazzi, galleries and museums, whose halls are decorated with masterpieces by Raphael, Leonardo da Vinci, Michelangelo, Bernini, Caravaggio and art collections of the famous Roman aristocratic dynasties Borghese, Barberini, Pamphili.

No less famous is the Spanish Steps in the Plaza de Espana. The grand staircase was built in 1723-1726 and led to the church of Santa Trinita Dei Monti and the Spanish embassy located here since 1647. With its splendor, it attracts many tourists, whose services include improvisational artists and masters of instant portraiture.

The most beautiful bridge in Rome over the Tiber — the bridge of St. Nicholas. Built by Emperor Hadrian (76-138), it is decorated with ten statues of angels, designed by the great Bernini.

The Vatican is a must-visit place for those who would like to touch the thousand-year history of Christianity by visiting the Cathedral of St. Nicholas. St. Peter’s Basilica –  the main basilica of the Catholic Church, in the Sistine Chapel with unique paintings by Michelangelo and in the Vatican palaces. The works of artists of the Ancient East and Antiquity can be found in the Museum of Gregoriano Egizio and in the Museum of Chiaramonti.
