Bern
The capital of Switzerland is one of the oldest and most charming cities in Europe. The name “Bern” comes from the German equivalent of the word “bear”. The origin of Bern dates back to the 12th century. In 1353, the city joined the Swiss Confederation. In 1848, Bern became the seat of the federal Government instead of Zurich.
The historic center of Bern is located on a peninsula formed by a bend in the Aara River, which is crossed in all directions by high and beautiful bridges. Over the centuries, the appearance of the city has not changed much, and today many of the sandstone buildings, historic towers, and unique fountains of Bern are some of the best examples of medieval architecture in Europe. In 1983, UNESCO declared Bern a World Cultural Heritage Site.
Today, Bern is an amazing mix of medieval architecture and ultra-modern buildings, business districts, and picturesque historical corners. Carefully preserved by the residents, the old part of the city is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and the center of Bern is famous for the largest indoor shopping center in Europe. The federal government and the Swiss parliament are located here, and the bears are rightfully considered the real owners of these places. This mighty beast became a symbol of the city long ago – in those days when its founder decided for himself that he would name it after the animal that he would kill first on the hunt. The first was the bear-in German, “bern”.
Main attractions:
Bern Historical Museum
The Bern Historical Museum is the second-largest history museum in Switzerland. The building, stylized as a Gothic castle, houses a rich collection of more than 250,000 exhibits. The oldest and most ancient history is particularly well represented; the collection of Flemish-Dutch tapestries from the 15th and 16th centuries is of world significance. In the museum, you can get acquainted with the culture and life of the people of the Stone Age, ancient Egypt, get an idea of folk art and crafts of bygone times
The Cathedral
The Cathedral of Bern is remembered by many travelers as one of the most fascinating sights of this European city. Everything about it is fascinating: its venerable age (the beginning of construction – 1421), and the splendor of its decoration, and the hundred-meter tower of the cathedral, which offers a beautiful view of the city. At the entrance to the cathedral, the main portal with bas-reliefs of Doomsday scenes attracts attention. The cathedral, towering over the tiled roofs of the Old Town, is a unique historical “long-term construction”: today it is difficult to imagine how a single building could have been built for a century and a half.
Untertorbrücke Bridge
The Untertorbrücke Bridge is one of those buildings that give an idea of the architectural appearance of Bern in the past. It was built in 1461, and therefore is completely different from other famous bridges of the city, built in the 19th century. Near the Untertorbrücke, right in the center of modern Bern, you can see the most living bears – they live in the so-called “bear pit”, which has been here since the mid-19th century.
Nideggkirche Church
The Nideggkirche Church is one of the many architectural attractions that await the attentive tourist in the central part of the city. The Gothic church, built on the foundation of a fortress that once stood here, is adjacent to other buildings, forming a unique architectural ensemble with them. At the beginning of the present century, the church was completely restored to stand for more than one hundred years to the delight of all connoisseurs of late Gothic.
The Baroque Church of the Holy Spirit
The Baroque Church of the Holy Spirit is an old Protestant church known locally as the Heiligeistkirche. It is a little less than three hundred years old – the construction of the temple began in 1726 and ended in 1729. The layout of the Church of the Holy Spirit is very interesting, especially the circular gallery stands out. The imposing sandstone columns seem to have been standing here since the foundation of the universe and will remain standing until the second coming of Christ.
Kinderfresserbrunnen Fountain
The Kinderfresserbrunnen Fountain (translated as” Child Eater“) on the Kornhausplatz Square is one of the many fountains in Bern built during the Middle Ages (1516), but it stands out with an unusual sculpture that depicts an evil giant swallowing children who have lost their way. The figure, which has a clear religious connotation, was supposed to frighten the younger generation, thereby protecting it from sin.
Albert Einstein House Museum
The Albert Einstein House-Museum is the residence of the great physicist during his stay in Bern. It was here, in Switzerland, that Einstein developed the special and later general theory of relativity. The scientist spoke of the years spent in Bern (1902-1907) as the happiest in his life. The museum recreates not only the real situation but also the atmosphere of that time, introduces visitors to the life of Einstein, his works.
