Bern, is a federal city, the de facto capital of Switzerland. The capital of the German-speaking canton of Bern and the administrative center of the district of Bern-Mittelland. It is located in the central part of the country north of the Alps, in the valley of the Aare River.

The population is 131.5 thousand people, the fifth-largest city in the country. About 270 thousand people live within the agglomeration.

Bern is the political center of Switzerland, where the government, parliament, and central bank are located. Location of the headquarters of the Universal Postal Union and the Swiss Railways.

The historical center, which originated on a peninsula in a bend of the Aare River, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. In 1405, it was severely damaged by a fire. In the Old Town, there is a late-Gothic cathedral, a clock tower, sculptural fountains, arcades with a length of 6 kilometers.

Bern was founded by Berthold V, Duke of Zehringen, in 1191. In the XIII—XVII centuries, it was an imperial city. In the XIV century, it joined the Swiss Union. In the XVI century, the Reformation was carried out. Since 1848, it has been the seat of the Swiss Parliament and government.

Bern is located in the southern part of the Swiss plateau, on the river Aare. Historically, the city was built on a high hill in a bend of the river, forming a natural defense of the city.
