Extended Description of the Vector Map
The city of Lausanne, the capital of the canton of Vaud – is not just another picturesque corner of Switzerland, whose shores are washed by Lake Geneva. The city is the fourth-largest settlement in the Confederacy.
Modern Lausanne is a real “cocktail of nationalities”: of course, more than 140 thousand people live in the city, of which about 40 percent are foreigners! Strolling through the local streets, you can often meet natives of France (about 18 percent), Portugal (17 percent), and Italy (11 percent). Spaniards and citizens of the countries of the former Yugoslavia are somewhat less likely to be found – about 8 percent each.
Today, the cantonal capital successfully combines two roles: on the one hand, it is here that the headquarters of the International Olympic Committee (which was founded in 1914) and the main building of the International Court of Arbitration for Sport are located. It is not surprising that Lausanne secretly bears the title of “Olympic Capital of the World“. It is interesting to note that the city has never hosted the Olympic Games (it claimed this privilege only in 1994 but to no avail).
Residents of Lausanne prefer to keep themselves in good shape: the cantonal capital annually hosts the international track and field competition Athletissima and the famous Lausanne Marathon.
It is also home to the Swiss Federal Court, making Lausanne the seat of the Confederation’s main judicial body.
Lausanne Metro
Lausanne is the only metro station in all of Switzerland! The subway consists of two lines – blue (M1) and crimson (M2), each of which has 14 stations. In total, the one-way journey takes about 20 minutes.
Interestingly, the Lausanne metro is a fully automated mechanism, which means that the driver does not need to participate in the management. Part of the road route runs “on top”, so in no case do not miss the opportunity to take a look at the picturesque Lausanne and its attractions. Lausanne itself is considered “the smallest city with a metro system”.
