Berlin is perhaps the most beautiful capital among the countries of Central Europe. Therefore, the city is the first in terms of the number of tourists coming, ahead of even Munich.

It is the largest city in Germany. It has a population of 3,400,000 and an area of 883 km2. The length of the city from north to south is 38 kilometers, from west to east 45 kilometers.

In this city, we recommend visiting the Kurfürstendamm Boulevard, which stretches from the Kaiser Wilhelm Memorial Church to the outskirts of the city. Walking along the boulevard, you will see the Breitscheidplatz square, you can visit KaDeWe – “Department Store of the West” and the shopping complex “Europe Center“.

The history of Berlin is rather grim, not only because the city had to become the center of fascist terror at one time, but also because it became the field on which the Cold War actually unfolded. However, with today’s panorama of new skyscrapers, trendy clubs, and boutiques, Berlin of the new millennium has regained its status as the most ” advanced ”  capital of the continent.

However, Berlin has not forgotten its history-this is evidenced by the opening of the Jewish Museum. The city, putting up with its past, moves with confidence into the future.

Today, the newly reunited Berlin is once again the capital of Germany. The city was almost completely destroyed by bombing during the Second World War – the streets were turned into piles of stones, and the parks – into muddy swamps. However, the spirit of optimism and willpower of many residents of Berlin allowed them to survive not only this difficult time but also the time of the division of the city, the symbol of which was the Berlin Wall.

Today, glass and steel structures rise above streets that used to be shapeless piles of stones, and parks and gardens have once again turned into calm and blooming shelters from the noise of the city.

Berlin is a huge kaleidoscope with many facets, with many new faces and views. Berlin is located in the middle of the land of Brandenburg, at the confluence of the River Spree with the River Havel. The territory of Berlin is covered with a dense network of canals and lakes formed during the Ice Age, which, together with numerous forests, are now an ideal holiday destination for citizens. The area of the city is 883 sq. km. Of which 480 sq. km. falls on West Berlin, 403 sq. km. on East Berlin. In 1987, Berlin, then divided into two parts, celebrated its 750th anniversary. Division and reunification have more than once determined the fate of Berlin.

Halfway between Kopenick and Spandau, at the narrowest point in the Spree valley, two settlements sprang up: Cologne on the island and Berlin on the northern shore. The first written mention of Cologne dates back to 1237. The 750th anniversary is celebrated differently in both parts of the divided city. Since the fall of the wall, and after the bitter years of division, Berlin has been thoroughly renovated in the shortest possible time. Entire city blocks with theaters, shopping centers, offices, and residential apartments have re-emerged.

Among the historical and architectural monuments in Berlin, it is necessary to note the Brandenburg Gate (1788-1791), the arsenal building (1695-1706), the Cathedral of St. Nicholas. Hedwig (1747-1773), St. Nicholas Cathedral in the Gothic style (XIV century), the Reichstag building (1884-1894), the world’s largest zoo, the Berlin TV Tower with a height of 365 m, the Botanical Garden, Treptow Park, which houses a complex of monuments to Soviet soldiers who died in Germany, as well as the central streets of the city – Unter den Linden Boulevard, Kurfurstendam, the world-famous Potsdamer Platz, and Alexanderplatz.

After the unification, Berlin became one of the leading cultural centers of the world. Almost 170 museums and collections, as well as 300 private and public galleries in Berlin invite you! Along with the contemporary exhibitions at the National Gallery and the Hamburg Station Museum, you should definitely visit the permanent exhibitions at the Egyptian Museum, the Cultural Forum, and the “Island of Museums“. The exhibition “Story of Berlin” at the Kurfürstendam tells about the different eras of Berlin.

For children, there are many museums and theaters in Berlin, as well as the Berlin Zoo, which is one of the largest zoos in Europe.

The main attraction of Berlin is the Reichstag. This is the building of the German Parliament, standing on Republic Square. On the night of February 17, 1933, a fire broke out in the Parliament building. It was obvious that the fire was set by the Nazis on Hitler’s orders, but the blame fell on the German Communist Party. This pretext was enough for Hitler’s detachments to start mass arrests of “dissidents and enemies of the legitimate government”. Because of this conflagration, Germany’s democracy came to an end. The Reichstag, literally – the Imperial Assembly – the name of the parliament in Kaiser’s Germany, the Weimar Republic, and the Third Reich.
