Berlin has 12 districts — important administrative units that can boast their own local government and even a Burgomaster. Unlike a lot of other cities, where everything “delicious” is located in the center, Berlin is completely interesting. This is not surprising: after the significant destruction left by the Second World War, and the division of the city by the wall into two countries — the GDR and the FRG – attractions and interesting tourist infrastructure quite naturally spread throughout the dozen districts. Mitte — the “heart” of the city, it was here in the 12th century that the current Berlin was born. Divided by the murky waters of the River Spree into two parts, Mitte is considered the most interesting area of the city.
Charlottenburg – Wilmersdorf before the fall of the Berlin Wall was the center of West Berlin, Since then, this quarter has been considered one of the most bohemian, creative, and authentic. It is here that the main shopping artery of the city is located – Kurfurstendamm Boulevard and the Fasanenstrasse crossing it. Here are the most pretentious hotels, expensive restaurants, and boutiques. From the point of view of sightseeing in Charlottenburg-Wilmersdorf, the building of the Berlin Technical University, the opera, the Charlottenburg Palace, as well as the Kaiser Wilhelm Memorial Church are interesting.
Friedrichshain-Kreuzberg is an amazing mix of Berlin West and East. The area can not boast of any special attractions, but here are the most fun parties in the city. The best nightclubs, noisy gatherings of students, the spirit of subcultural Berlin — all this is Friedrichshain-Kreuzberg. Since the 1960s, originals from all over the country have settled here-from hairy hippies to acid ravers, because of the number of inexpensive bars, designer shops, vintage second-hand shops, nightclubs.
Lichtenberg is not the best place for tourists in Berlin. Located in the neighborhood of Alexanderplatz, this area is almost half populated, alas, by disadvantaged immigrants from the former CIS countries. But you can see something: the Friedrichsfelde Zoo and the Berlin-Karlhorst Museum of World War II History. The typical residential area of Marzahn-Hellersdorf It is also not the most interesting place, but two Berlin “pearls” have disappeared here — the recreation park “Marzahn” and the palace park “Bisdorf“.

Before Hitler came to power, the quarter lived a cheerful and carousing life — with whole streets of shops, cabarets, theaters, and the best restaurants in Europe. After Mitte turned into a typical official and clerical district: entire streets were occupied by ministries and departments, and on Wilhelmstrasse there was a building-a giant of the Reich Chancellery. During the war, the area was almost wiped off the face of the earth and until the 1990s it was restored. Today, there is the seat of government and the buildings of the Bundestag, the Museum Island, the Brandenburg Gate, the TV tower, the iconic place for ladies – the Lafayette Gallery, and much, much more.
Neukolln is the most multinational district of the German capital. Despite the fact that tourists are not recommended to go here once again (especially in the dark), it is worth a visit. It was Neukeln that suffered the least during the battles of the Second World War because here you can find many buildings of the late 18th and early 19th centuries of the Grunder era. Other “must-see”: the local opera house and the Richardplatz square.
Pankow — a very quiet and beautiful area, which grew out of a small village of Slavic settlers of the early 14th century. It was here that the leaders of the GDR preferred to live before the unification of Germany, but today Pankow is mostly inhabited by ethnic Germans from the middle class. Attractions: the largest synagogue in the country on the Rijkestrasse, the park, and palace “Schoenhausen“, as well as the town hall of the early 20th century.
Reinickendorf – the outskirts of Berlin. On the one hand, most of it is occupied by an industrial zone, on the other, the area is surrounded by forests and lakes, where residents of the city love to walk and have picnics. Tourists usually know Reinickendorf from Tegel Airport. Other interesting places are the palace and the park “Tegel“, as well as the cultural center “Tegel Port“.
Spandau – once a separate city, and now a district of Berlin – is interesting primarily for the walls of its ancient Citadel. The twelve-sided fortress with 4 bastions and a tower is an example of an ideal military city of the 16th century. In addition to it, Spandau is interesting: parks, lakes, the site of the infamous Spandau prison, where Rudolf Hess died, as well as the Old Town with a recreated Kolk Street and the Church of St. Nicholas. Steglitz-Zehlendorf is one of the most prestigious areas of the German capital: villas, mansions, parks, and forests are its main attractions. It is here that you should look for the best Berlin beach — this is the Strandbad on the Grosse Wansee Lake. In the local quarter of Dahlem, the German village, recreated by archaeologists, and the botanical garden is interesting.
Tempelhof – Schoneberg is probably the perfect place for tourists with children. There is a well-developed infrastructure, a lot of entertainment, but somehow quieter than in Mitte or Kreuzberg. And the main local attraction to match — one of the best zoos in Europe. Tempelhof also has a special feature — it is the most homosexual district in Berlin, which speaks not only about the tolerance of local residents but also about the safety of the entire quarter as a whole. By the way, this status does not mean that every second house here is a bar “Blue Oyster“, the general appearance of the area is quite conservative.
Treptow-Kopenick – another “easy” city, where parks and lakes constantly replace each other. Local attractions: the sculpture Molecule Man, symbolizing the unification of Berlin, the Treptov Park with a monument to a Soviet soldier, the old town hall in Kopenick, and the eponymous luxurious Baroque palace.
