GEOGRAPHY OF NEW ZEALAND
New Zealand is located in the southwestern Pacific Ocean, separated from Australia by the Tasman Sea at a distance of more than 4,000 kilometers. The territory of the country consists of two main islands, North and South, separated by the Cook Strait, as well as about 700 islands of a much smaller area, most of which are uninhabited. To get to New Zealand by plane, for example, from Moscow, it will take about a day of flight time.

The total area of the country is almost 270,000 square kilometers, which is slightly larger than the United Kingdom or Belarus, but slightly smaller than Japan or Germany. It takes two hours to fly from Auckland, the largest city on the North Island, to Queenstown, the most popular city on the South Island. At the same time, wherever you are, the nearest coast will be no more than 3 hours away by car. In fact, you can even snowboard in the mountains and surf in the sea on the same day.

CLIMATE OF NEW ZEALAND
The climate of New Zealand is diverse, from subtropical to temperate. Relatively, the north, the warmer, and the south, the cooler. At the same time, the seasons are the opposite of those in the Northern Hemisphere. The coldest month is July, and the hottest in February. A large number of sunny hours are typical for both islands, and moderate precipitation is distributed evenly throughout the year, with the exception of drier summers.

North Island
On the hilly and green North Island, the temperature difference is small. The average annual temperature is +15-16 degrees Celsius. In the largest city of the North Island, Auckland, the temperature rarely drops to 0 degrees in winter, and rarely exceeds +30 degrees in summer. The east coast of the island is even sunnier and drier than the west coast. The capital of New Zealand, Wellington, located on the southern, most part of the North Island, is cooler with an average annual temperature of about +13 degrees and windier, but the temperature in summer here can be even slightly higher than in Auckland.

South Island
The mountainous Southern Island is divided by the Southern Alps in half. This is blocking the way to the prevailing westerly winds and divides the island into two different climatic zones. The west coast of the South Island is the wettest part of the country; the eastern part, just 100 kilometers away — is the driest. In the northern part of the island in the cities of Picton and Nelson, the weather is dominated by a moderately sunny climate, with an average minimum of +3 degrees in winter and an average maximum of +23 degrees in summer (up to +36 degrees absolute maximum). In the central and southern part of the island, temperatures can already fall below 0 in winter, but above +30 in summer.
