Extended Description of the Vector Map
Tampere
Tampere is a city in southern Finland, located between two lakes: Nyasijarvi in the north and Pyhjajarvi in the south. Since these levels of these lakes differ in level by 18 meters, the Tammerkoski River flows between them with a length of 945 meters. The river divides the historical part of the city into two parts. The rapid waters of the river are used to generate electrical energy.
Tampere is one of the largest cities in Finland, the cultural center of the country. In Tampere, you can find entertainment for absolutely every taste: skiing, water sports, visiting the most interesting sights, exciting shopping. For recreation with children in Tampere, there are excellent conditions-interesting thematic museums, an amusement park “Syarkianniemi” with attractions, a dolphinarium, a planetarium, and a zoo. In summer, Tampere hosts major music and theater festivals, which attract tourists from all over the world.
Main sights:
Tampere Cathedral, designed by architect Lars Sonk and completed in 1907, is a majestic monument of national romanticism.
Orthodox Church of St. Alexander Nevsky and St. Nikola is considered the most prominent example of Neo-Byzantine church architecture in Scandinavia.
Another outstanding church building is the modern concrete Art Nouveau church in the Kaleva district, designed by architects Riley and Reim Pietil in 1966. According to the project of this world-famous couple, the main library of the city was also built, which is called “Metso“, i.e. capercaillie, because of the configuration of the building, which resembles the silhouette of a capercaillie.
Many buildings in the city center were built at the turn of the XIX-XX centuries in the style of “Jugend” and national romanticism.
There are about 20 museums in Tampere.
The Sara Hildenin taidemuseo Museum of Art is a work of art in itself. It exhibits a collection of Finnish and foreign contemporary art.
The Art Museum of Tampere presents mainly Finnish art of the XIX-XX centuries. In Tampere, there is a Lenin Museum (Lenin-museo).
The Doll and Costume Museum (Haiharan nukke ja pukumuseo), housed in the spacious halls of an attractive old estate, has more than 4,000 dolls on display.
In the Valley of the Moomins (Muumilaakso) presents the world’s favorite creations of Tove Jansson, the famous Finnish children’s writer – the heroes of her fairy tales and their fairy-tale home.
Geography:
Tampere is located on the isthmus between two large lakes, Nyasijärvi and Pyhäjärvi, on the banks of the Tammerkoski rapids. In the immediate vicinity of the city, there are 180 smaller lakes.
