Reykjavik
Reykjavik, the capital of Iceland, (“The Bay of Smoke” – because of the steam hot springs located in the vicinity) is located in the south-west of the island. This name was given to this area in 874 by the founder of the city, Ingolfur Arnarson. The population of the capital is half of the population of the state.

The main symbol of Reykjavik is often called the Cathedral of Hallsgrimkirkja, notable for its 75-meter bell tower. The building looks like an inverted stalactite. From the observation deck of the church, there is a wonderful panorama of the entire capital.

It is interesting to visit the building “Pearl” with a rotating restaurant The Pearl, which is based on several huge tanks, which used to store hot water, and now houses a museum of sagas, a shop, and a cafe.

Main attractions:
First of all, it is the Blue Lagoon, which has long been one of the main symbols of Iceland and is loved by both locals and foreign tourists. This is a unique geothermal lake, saturated with natural salts, where you can swim at any time of the year – the water temperature here is about +40 C. The lagoon is surrounded by lava fields, a geothermal power plant with a swimming pool, a picturesque rocky coast, and a bird market. After driving east from the Blue Lagoon on the lava-covered Reikjanes Peninsula, it is worth visiting the fishing village of Grindavik. Another interesting place on the island of Reykjavik is a narrow bridge about 10 meters long, connecting Europe to North America. It is believed that a very small part of Reykjavik, on which the western end of the bridge was strengthened, is already located on the American tectonic plate.

Climate:
Subarctic marine, with cool, wet summers and windy winters.

Geography:
Reykjavik is the northernmost European capital, located on the southwest coast of Iceland, in the Gulf of Faxafloi.

How to get:
The most convenient way to get to Iceland is through the Scandinavian capitals (Oslo, Stockholm, Copenhagen), in the summer there are flights through Helsinki. You can also fly to Reykjavik with connections via London, Amsterdam, Frankfurt.

Population:
The population of Reykjavik is about 119 thousand people, together with the suburbs-200 thousand.

Restaurants:
Icelandic cuisine (in a modern version (fusion))  attracts tourists with its uniqueness and creativity. Quite often, traditional Icelandic dishes are supplemented with notes of Italian, French, and Japanese cuisine.

Reykjavik has more than 100 first-class restaurants that combine their own unique style with warm Icelandic hospitality.
Fish restaurants are especially excellent. The crystal-clear coastal waters of the island give the fish dishes an amazing taste, and the island’s rich fish stocks provide a large selection of seafood.

The Pearl Restaurant (Perlan)
Many years ago, the famous Icelandic artist Johannes Kjarval designed a fairy-tale palace on top of one of the buildings of the capital. Now in this unique building is located the most prestigious restaurant in ReykjavikThe Pearl.
The restaurant slowly rotates, offering guests the most beautiful views of the city and the nearby mountains. This restaurant serves a la carte (international cuisine) dishes, but there is a special emphasis on traditional Icelandic dishes.

Siggi Hall Restaurant
The founder of this elegant restaurant is Iceland’s most famous chef and the host of several culinary programs on TV, Siggy Hall. The restaurant is located on the ground floor of the Odinsve Hotel. Siggy Hall is famous for inventiveness in the preparation of dishes from
traditional Icelandic products – fish and lamb. Its recipes contain all the best of the world’s culinary traditions, while the main place in the restaurant’s menu is given to seafood.

The Argentina Steakhouse restaurant is considered one of the best in the city. Its halls are decorated in a rustic style. The restaurant’s signature dishes are meat and fish, fried in the Argentine style.

3 Frakkar Restaurant is located in the old part of Reykjavik, where all the streets are named after the ancient Norse gods. This is a quiet and cozy place, where guests will receive a warm welcome. This restaurant has the best chef in the country, specializing in seafood dishes. The most popular fish dishes are whale meat chops, flounder, catfish, fish soup.

Kaffi Reykjavik with an Ice Bar – this place has been considered the most popular among the locals for many years. Despite the fact that Kaffi Reykjavik is one of the largest restaurants in the city (up to 700 people), a special touching atmosphere is created inside the restaurant and around the building. In 2003, the restaurant opened a permanent Ice Bar.
