The city of Malmö
Malmo is the third-largest city in Sweden. It is located in the southernmost administrative region — Skone and is its administrative center.

The commercial center of Southern Sweden, Malmo, like many blue-collar cities in Europe, is forced to adapt to modern realities, as heavy industry, developed earlier, is declining and enterprises require modernization in accordance with the latest technologies. A good example of this process is the creation of the “City of Tomorrow” in Vestra Hamnen, on the site of a former shipyard, turned into a lively commercial and university center with modern houses planned by talented architects.

The oldest districts of Malmo date back to the XIV and XV centuries. In the program of tourists, a visit to the Church of St. Peter of the XIII century. The main construction was carried out in the city from the middle of the XIX century until the XX century, and the Art Nouveau style, so popular in the Scandinavian countries, served as an important component of it. The intensive course of restoration since the 1960s has changed the appearance of the city center, but a fair part has been lost forever.

You can do shopping, as well as drink coffee or something stronger in the pedestrian areas and on Lilla-Torg and Mellevongstorget. Most shops are open on Sunday. For those who are interested in culture, it is important to remember that theaters, museums, and art galleries are located close to each other, they are easily accessible on foot. Stortoget Square is the place where the historic town hall is located and there is a massive equestrian statue of King Charles X.

History
The first mention of Malmo dates back to 1259 – it was a small harbor in the shallow bay of Lomma, where Hanseatic vessels later entered on their way to catch herring. The Danish King Eric of Pomerania built defensive structures here. In 1658, Malmo was ceded to Sweden by the Roskilde Peace Treaty. The city owes its rapid flourishing in the XVIII century both to the port and personally to the merchant Franz Suell (1744-1817), whose monument stands on Norra Vallgatan. In 1856, a railway was built to Stockholm. In 2005 on the site of the former shipyard in the Ehresund Strait, the building “Turning Torso” has grown – a 190-meter skyscraper designed by the world-famous architect Santiago Calatrava. The 54-story structure, which has not only offices but also apartments, consists of nine cubes that unfold from the base to the top by 90 °. A new city tunnel is under construction (2006-2011), which will connect the central station with the Ehresund Bridge.

Sights of Malmo
Old Town
Most of the city’s attractions can be reached on foot. The boundary of the Old Town is the circumferential rope, and the center is the Stortorget Square, wherein the center there is an equestrian statue of Carl X Gustav, erected in honor of the annexation of the province of Skåne to Sweden (1658). In the eastern part of the square, among the impressive buildings of the early XX century, the magnificent Renaissance Town Hall (1546) stands out. A little further on is the residence of the head of the government of Lena. Kyrkogata Street leads to the brick Gothic Church of  St. Peter’s Church, built in the XIV century on the model of the Church of St. Mary (Marienkirche) in Lubeck. The interior white plastered rooms are covered with vaults, the pillars are decorated with Renaissance epitaphs. The church treasures are displayed in an armored display case in the side nave. The most beautiful square of the city of Lilla Torg is framed by picturesque half-timbered houses of the XVI-XVIII centuries, very unusual for Sweden – this is a real “Danish” heritage, but without these houses, a small square (Lilla Torg) would not seem very cozy. In summer, the outdoor cafes on the square are always crowded, and in winter on the ice – an ice rink is poured on the square – pirouettes are written out by no fewer people.

Art and Design Center
Through the gate, the path leads to the former Hedmanska Garden barn, where the Center for Artistic Design and Design (Form Design Center) has been located since 1964. Over 50 Swedish companies exhibit and sell swap products here: these are not only “veterans” of design “Georg Jensen“, “Marimekko“, “Kosta Boda“, “Orrefbrs“, but also talented young people (Opening hours: Tue.-Fri. 11.00-17.00, Thu. to 18.00, Sat., Sun. to 16.00).

The most beautiful burgher buildings in Malmo include Flensburgska Hus (1589) on Sodergatan 9; Jorgen Kocks Hus (1525); Rosenvingeska Hus (1534) on Vastergatan 2/5; Tunnelns Hus (1519) on Adelgatan 4; Diedenska Hus (1620) on Ostergatan 6 and a complex of two houses Thottska Hus (1558) – also on Ostergatan . The bars and clubs in the alleys around Gustav Adolf Square (Gustav Adolfs Torg) are interesting. Malmo is also proud of its own Soho quarter – this is Mollevangen.

Hanseatic Ships Museum
In the exposition of this museum (Medeltidsskeppen), there are two sailing vessels (koggi). A tavern is open at the museum, in which the medieval atmosphere is recreated (Opening hours: Jan.-May, Sept.,-22 Dec. Tue.-Sun. 11.00-16.00, June-Aug. every day 10.00-16.00).

Const Hall
In one of the largest halls of contemporary art, the Konsthall, the works of Swedish artists are widely presented. Working hours: every day (11.00-17.00, MS. to 21.00).

Museum of Modern Art “Rooseum”
“Rooseum” (“Rooseum”, the Museum of Modern Art) was founded in 1988 by the Swedish collector and financier Fredrik Roos in the building of the former Malmo gas plant (Opening hours: wed. 14.00-20.00, Thu.-Sun. 12.00-18.00).

Toy Museum
Barbie, Winnie the Pooh, and Harry Potter: over 10 thousand toys released over the past half-century are on display at the Leksaksland Museum on Frederiksbergatan 16th – to the delight of visitors of all ages. The museum also has its own “Secret Room” (Opening hours: Wed-Sun. 11.00-16.00).

What else to see
The “Turning Torso” is a magnificent new residential skyscraper, which quickly turned into a landmark of the city. The Malmo City Library, a glass-fronted building hovering over the lake, boasts an amazing light show at night. The curved Ersund Bridge connects Malmo with Copenhagen not only by road but also by rail. Traditional summer holidays in the magnificent Malmekhus Castle of the Renaissance (it is worth visiting there at any time of the year).

The romantic sculpture “Tragos” and the fountain, where 22 theatrical characters are reflected, are located next to the opera house.

Beach life in Malmo
The local “Copacabana” is called Ribersborg – it is a magnificent sandy beach with a length of 2 km. Especially hardened people can swim in seawater all year round, steam in a sauna with a wood stove, and then sit in a cafe and enjoy the view of the strait. And all this is in Kallbadhus (Opening hours: Mon.-Fri. 8.30-19.00, Sat., Sun. 8.30-16.00).

Ehresund Ticket Malmo guest ticket
In “Malmo Tourism” (at the central station) you can buy a single ticket “Malmokortet” for 1,2 or 3 days. It entitles you to free travel on the city bus, pa free parking, free access to city museums, free city tour, as well as pa discounts on canal excursions and cultural events, as well as in restaurants and shops. For those who want to get to know the capital of Denmark, we recommend the train: to Copenhagen from Malmo Central Station is only 35 minutes. 1 ticket “Ehresund” includes one trip across the strait by ferry and one by a bridge.

Canal tours
Opposite the Central Station is the bailiff, from which a pleasure boat departs several times a day from April to September. This is a wonderful tour of the canals and the palace park.

Purchases
The main shopping area in Malmo is the pedestrian zone Sodergatan and the surrounding streets. On Lilla Torg – Form Design shopping center. In total, there are 800 shops and 7 shopping centers in the city – such as “Hansa” on Stora Nygatan. Fiskehoddorna sells freshly caught fish (Opening hours: Tue.-Thu., Sun. 8.00-13.00). Fans of flea markets rush to Sodra Promenaden on Sundays.

Holidays
The apotheosis of the cultural life of the city is the annual Malmofestival on the third week of August. The festival in Malmo is 900 hours of free entertainment, music, and culinary pleasures. Up to 1.5 million citizens from all over the world become guests of the grandest festival in Sweden.
