Lucerne is one of the most beautiful cities in German-speaking Switzerland, the pearl of the country, and a must-see for all. Lucerne was the first to join the Swiss Confederation and is now known, among other things, for the legendary Wilhelm Tell. It was here that the famous story about the boy and the apple unfolded.
Lucerne (Luzern), Switzerland
Kappelbrücke
Kappelbrücke – old wooden bridge Kappelbrücke. The name comes from the Chapel – a church near the river bank, on one side of the bridge. The bridge is 170 meters long. The bridge was built in 1333 and is the oldest wooden bridge in Europe. Under the roof of the bridge, there are more than 100 paintings by Heinrich Wägmann, dedicated to the most significant moments in the history and philosophy of Switzerland.
On August 18, 1993, there was a fire on the bridge, which caused many paintings and the bridge to be badly damaged. The bridge was restored, but you can still see the charred blackened drawings. They were left unrecoverable in memory of the loss.
The octagonal tower (Wasserturm) of the bridge is preserved in its original form. At one time, it managed to serve as both an arsenal and a prison.
Spreuerbrücke
Spreuerbrücke – “mill bridge” – the second old wooden bridge. A little farther than Kappelbrücke, a little smaller, a little darker, and a little younger. The bridge was built in 1408, and a small chapel dedicated to the Virgin Mary was added in 1568. The paintings were created in the 17th century by the artist Kaspar Meglinger and all have a single motif — “Dance of death“. This is an allegorical plot of the Middle Ages, symbolizing death and the sincerity of human existence. The image of death is personified in the form of a skeleton, it can be found as one of the characters in all the paintings. The paintings are supplemented with poems by Muller.
Kapellplatz and St. Peters-Kirche
St. Peter’s Church, the oldest in Lucerne. It was built in 1178.
The fountain on Kapellplatz Square is dedicated to the Carnival held in the city every year in the spring.
Altes Rathaus
The old Townhall. This Renaissance building was built in 1602. It has interesting stonework, a huge roof, and a high rectangular tower. The tower served as an excellent vantage point for the crowds in the market square, where something like a fair was held on Tuesday and Saturday mornings.
Am-Rhyn-Haus
This 17th-century house is located to the left of the old Town Hall. It is here that the Picasso Museum is located. The entrance to the building is located at Furrengasse 21.
Mühlenplatz
This square is located next to the smaller wooden bridge — Spreuerbrücke. Literally, the name translates as Mill Square. This square has served as an open-air fair venue since the 16th century.
Weinmarkt
This is a charming beautiful park with a fountain in the center. At one time, the mysteries of the Brotherhood of the Crown of Thorns were held here.
Among the beautifully painted buildings of the square, you should pay attention to the Müllersche Apotheke. This pharmacy has existed here since 1530.
Hirschenplatz
Hirschenplatz — “Deer Square“. Another picturesque square of the old town of Lucerne, with painted facades of houses and wrought-iron decorations. In 1779, Goethe stayed at the Goldener Adler Hotel for a while.
Löwendenkmal
Löwendenkmal – monument “The Dying Lion“. Carved into the cliff face is the figure of a lion, an allegorical representation of the bravery of the Swiss Guard, who bravely died at the Tuileries in Paris in 1792, saving the honor and dignity of the French Queen Marie Antoinette. During his grand tour of Europe, Mark Twain called this monument “the saddest and most touching stone statue in the world”.
The monument was created by the outstanding Danish sculptor Bertel Thorvaldsen in 1821.
Hofkirche
St. Leodegar Collegiate Church. This church is named after the patron saint of Lucerne and is the most important in the city. There used to be a monastery here, but the modern building was built in the 17th century and bears the imprint of both Gothic and Renaissance. The interior of the cathedral features wrought iron elements, wood carvings, and the famous organ from 1640 with its 4,950 pipes. In summer, you can listen to organ concerts here.
Museggmauer
In Lucerne, a significant section of the medieval wall of the Muzeggmauer (built around 1400, 870 meters long) with eight high towers has been preserved. Three of them are open to the public. The clock of one of the towers has the privilege of ringing every hour one minute earlier than all the other city clocks. In Switzerland, there are now almost no cities with medieval walls, and this is another distinctive feature of Lucerne.
Nölliturm
This is a round tower on the river bank, built-in 1513. The height of the tower is about 28 meters. In 1901, the tower had to make an arch in order to pass through it.
The tower is home to the Saffron Guild and the repository of the archive.
Männliturm
“Iron Mannli” – a comic figure from the banner. The height of the tower is about 33 m. It is the second from the Spreuerbrücke Bridge. The tower is open to the public.
Luegisland
This tower has a popular name in the old days. This is the tallest tower among all, its height is 52.6 meters. The tower was located here before the construction of the wall. It is believed that it served as a guard tower and was built around 1291.
Heuturm / Wachtturm
The watchtower is 44 meters high. At one time, it served as a gunpowder warehouse, but a lightning strike in 1701 caused all 350 quintals of gunpowder to explode. Several large boulders fell into the city, killing people. The tower was restored.
Zytturm
The tower is easily identifiable by the clock, from which it gets its name. The clock was installed in 1535. The dial was so large that even the fishermen on the lake could tell the exact time. The clock on the tower chimes the hour 1 minute earlier than all city clocks. The frescoes on the tower were made by the local artist Schobinger Schmidiger at the beginning of this century. The total height of the tower is 31 m.
Schirmerturm
The name literally means “Protective” Tower. It led from the gate of the same name into the city (at one time it was a separate state). The height of the tower is 27.5 m, the tower is open to the public.
Pulverturm — “powder” tower. As a precaution, the townspeople kept their gunpowder not in one tower, but in two. If in 1701 the gunpowder in Heuturm exploded, then at least in this tower it was preserved. This tower is one of the oldest on the wall. Its height is 27.5 m.
Allenwinden
The name literally translates as “tower of all winds”. Together with the lower tower, the Dächliturm is now lost in a maze of houses.
Dächliturm – the last of the nine towers, Dächliturm, is also known as Chutzenturm. This is the smallest of all the towers. A distinctive feature is its pyramidal roof, which is older than most of the roofs of the other towers. Since 1936, the tower has been home to the Carpenters ‘ Guild.
Jesuitenkirche
The Jesuit Church of Lucerne. It served two purposes — as a secondary school and as a place for the pastoral activities of the Jesuits. The Jesuits arrived in Lucerne in 1574, and in 1576 they opened their school here. By the middle of the next century, the number of students is growing uncanonically, reaching a value of 300-400 students per town with a population of fewer than 4,000 people. So on the feast of St. Francis Xavier (patron saint of Lucerne) on December 3, 1666, the first stone of the future church was laid, and 11 years later, on August 29, 1677, the new church was consecrated by the Papal Nuncio Edoardo Cibo.
It was the first Baroque church in Switzerland. Inside, the church is richly decorated in white and gold tones, and the ceiling is decorated with a painting made in the mid-18th century and dedicated to St. Francis Xavier, whose statue also adorns the facade of the church. The painting was made by the Lugano Toricelli masters. The same saint is also depicted in the altar composition, kneeling before the Virgin Mary.
