Extended Description of the Vector Map
Lucerne / Luzern is a city in Switzerland, in the center of the Swiss Plateau, the capital of the German-speaking canton of Lucerne and the administrative district of Lucerne. The city is located on the shores of Lake Lucerne, at the foot of Mount Pilatus.
Lucerne was founded in Roman times, or even earlier, and there was already a small settlement at the point where the Reuss River flows out of the Firvaldstet Lake. The monastery of St. Leodegar im Gough was founded at the beginning of the VIII century, and the first chronicle mention of it dates back to 840. Around the bridge over the Reuss (Reusbrücke), which connected the monastery with the farms located to the south, over time, a trading village grew up, which occupied a rather important place in the region. In 1178, this ecclesiastical parish passed from the monastery of St. Leodegar im Hof to Lucerne, and it is this act of history that is considered as the act of founding the city.
A new impetus for the development of the Lucerne was the opening of the Saint-Gotthard Pass in 1220. During this period, the first fortress wall was built, fortified with towers.
The year 1332 was a significant date in the history of Switzerland: for the first time, permanent equality was established between urban and rural settlements, which played an important role in the formation of the union of cantons. It was probably only with the entry of Lucerne that the existence of the young Swiss Confederation was secured. This significant event gave the city a boost in development, and Lucerne soon became a city-state.
In 1386, the victory won by the Swiss Confederation at Sempach helped Lucerne finally free itself from the oppression of Austria and thus contributed to the formation of the territorial state of Lucerne. At the end of the XVIII century, the city-state was completely ruled by the patriciate, consisting of only 29 named families.
As the first city to join the Swiss Confederation, Lucerne has long held a special place in it, which, along with the successful geographical location of the city, would seem to make it the capital of Switzerland. However, the canton of Lucerne was led by the Sonderbund, which was defeated in 1847, and its inhabitants voted against the adoption of a federal constitution in 1848, so that Bern eventually became the capital of Switzerland. Thus, Lucerne lost its influence and importance in the political sense in the middle of the XIX century, but later, thanks to the development of tourism, this city became the cultural center of all of Switzerland.
Lucerne is a predominantly Catholic city, unlike nearby Bern and Zurich, which are dominated by Protestantism: its three most famous churches — the Franciscan, the Jesuit, and St. Leodegard — belong to the city’s Catholic community.
Lucerne is home to Europe’s largest transport museum.
