All About Oakland, California

Oakland is the largest city and the county seat of Alameda County, California , USA. Oakland is the largest port city in the East Bay region of the San Francisco Bay Area, the third largest city in the San Francisco Bay Area, the eighth most populous city in California, and the 45th most populous city in the United States. With a population of 433,031 as of 2019, it serves as a trading center for the San Francisco Bay Area; its Port of Oakland is the busiest port in the San Francisco Bay Area, the whole of Northern California, and the fifth busiest port in the United States of America.

The area of the city of Oakland was originally inhabited by the Costanoan Indians due to the abundant water supply in the area. At the beginning of the 1770s, the Spanish decided to explore what is now California, making them the first white men to visit the area.

In 1820, an application was made by a Spanish soldier named Luis Maria Peralta and land was granted in close proximity to the current East Bay Area. It wasn’t long after the Mexican War that the area of California was taken over by the United States.

Not long after becoming a state, simple mineral mining began with common minerals, but quickly turned to gold mining when it was discovered in 1848. The following year, many gold-seekers and settlers came to the area in hopes of becoming rich. This fantasy has come true for many who have been prepared for the search. The sudden influx of people forced the creation of a local government and legal system, which also paved the way for the city to become a city, as it did in 1854.

Close to San Francisco, the area flourished with businesses both locally and in the vicinity. Both cities lay on the bay ‘s edge, making them perfect for hosting many shipping companies. As time went on, Oakland took advantage of that advantage and became a major port for both cities. Oakland is currently one of the world ‘s busiest ports for container ships.

The surroundings of Oakland boast many natural features, along with numerous attractions attracting visitors from all over the United States. One of the most prominent features of Oakland is Merritt Lake, which is well known for its location right in the city centre. Lake Merritt is home to much of the city’s recreation and is named after the Lake Merritt Wild Fowl Sanctuary, the oldest sanctuary of its kind in the United States, dating back to 1870.

Oakland is home not only to a magnificent lake, but also to many public performances by the Oakland Symphony Orchestra and the Oakland Civic Ballet. Oakland is also home to the Oakland Museum, the Knowland State Arboretum and the Oakland Zoo Park.

Educational institutions such as the California College of Arts and Crafts, Holy Names College, Mills College and Patten College are also established in the Oakland area.
