History:

Ancient History:

The area that is now Monaco has a history dating back to ancient times. It was originally settled by the Ligurians, an ancient Indo-European people. The Phocaeans, ancient Greek mariners, established a colony in the area around the 6th century BC.

Roman Period:

During the Roman Empire, Monaco was part of the Maritime Alps province. The Romans established a fortification on the Rock of Monaco, which provided a strategic vantage point overlooking the Mediterranean.

Middle Ages:

In the medieval period, Monaco changed hands several times between the Italian city-states and the Holy Roman Empire. In the 13th century, the Grimaldi family took control of Monaco after a strategic military maneuver.

Grimaldi Rule:

The Grimaldi dynasty, specifically the branch led by François Grimaldi, captured the fortress in 1297 disguised as Franciscan monks. The Grimaldis have ruled Monaco ever since, with brief interruptions.
