Pakistan is divided into several administrative territories, each with its own governance structure and responsibilities. Here are the main administrative territories in Pakistan:

  1. Provinces:
    • Punjab: Located in the northeastern part of Pakistan, Punjab is the country’s most populous province. Lahore is its provincial capital. It is known for its rich cultural heritage and agriculture.
    • Sindh: Situated in the southern part of Pakistan, Sindh is the country’s second-most populous province. Karachi is its provincial capital and the largest city in Pakistan.
    • Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP): Located in the northwestern region, KP is known for its scenic beauty, with Peshawar as its provincial capital.
    • Balochistan: The largest province in terms of area, Balochistan is in the southwestern part of Pakistan. Quetta is its provincial capital.
  2. Gilgit-Baltistan (GB):
    • Situated in the northern part of Pakistan, Gilgit-Baltistan is an autonomous region that borders China and India. It is known for its stunning mountain landscapes and is a gateway to some of the world’s highest peaks, including K2.
  3. Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK):
    • AJK is another autonomous region in the northern part of Pakistan. It shares a border with Indian-administered Jammu and Kashmir. The capital of AJK is Muzaffarabad.
  4. Islamabad Capital Territory:
    • Islamabad is the capital city of Pakistan and is a federally administered territory. It serves as the country’s political and administrative center.
  5. Federally Administered Tribal Areas (FATA):
    • Formerly an autonomous region, FATA was merged with Khyber Pakhtunkhwa in 2018. The region was historically governed by its own set of rules and regulations, known as the Frontier Crimes Regulations (FCR).
  6. Pakistan-administered Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK):
    • This region is distinct from Azad Jammu and Kashmir, which is a self-governing territory. Pakistan-administered AJK consists of the areas of the original princely state of Jammu and Kashmir that are administered by Pakistan.
  7. Gwadar and Islamabad (Federal Territories):
    • These are federally administered territories under the direct control of the federal government. Gwadar is a port city in Balochistan, while Islamabad is the national capital.

Each administrative territory has its own government and administrative structure, with varying degrees of autonomy and responsibilities. Pakistan’s federal government, based in Islamabad, oversees matters of national importance, while the provincial and territorial governments handle local governance and administration within their respective regions.
