DWG Map Iowa State

Iowa is not typically known for its national parks, as it doesn’t have any of the iconic national parks you might find in states like California or Utah. However, it does have some beautiful natural areas and historical sites managed by the National Park Service, although they are categorized as National Historic Sites, National Monuments, or National Historic Trails rather than traditional national parks. Here are a few notable ones:

  1. Effigy Mounds National Monument: Located in northeast Iowa along the Mississippi River, this monument preserves a significant concentration of Native American effigy mounds. These mounds, shaped like animals and other figures, were constructed by indigenous people over 1,000 years ago.
  2. Herbert Hoover National Historic Site: This site is dedicated to the birthplace and childhood home of the 31st President of the United States, Herbert Hoover. It includes a visitor center, the Hoover family’s original Quaker meetinghouse, and the gravesite of President and Mrs. Hoover.
  3. Lewis and Clark National Historic Trail: While not specific to Iowa, this trail follows the path taken by the famous explorers, Lewis and Clark, on their expedition across the western United States. Part of the trail passes through Iowa, where you can learn about the journey and its impact on the region.
  4. George Washington Carver National Monument: Located in southwest Missouri, but not far from the Iowa border, this monument commemorates the life and work of George Washington Carver, a prominent African American scientist, educator, and agricultural innovator.
  5. Mormon Pioneer National Historic Trail: This trail follows the 1,300-mile route that Mormon pioneers traveled from Nauvoo, Illinois, to Salt Lake City, Utah, in the 1840s. A portion of the trail runs through Iowa, with historical sites and interpretive centers along the way.

While Iowa may not have the expansive national parks you find in the western United States, these National Park Service sites offer valuable insights into the state’s natural and cultural history. They are great places to explore if you’re interested in history, nature, and outdoor recreation in Iowa.
