DWG Map Golden Circle Iceland

The Golden Circle is a popular tourist route in Iceland that covers several natural and cultural attractions in the southwestern part of the country. While it’s not a nature park in the traditional sense, the Golden Circle features some of Iceland’s most iconic natural wonders. Here are the main highlights along the Golden Circle route:

  1. Þingvellir National Park: This national park is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and holds great historical and geological significance. It’s where the Alþingi (the Icelandic parliament) was founded in 930 AD, making it one of the oldest parliamentary institutions in the world. The park also features the Silfra Fissure, where you can snorkel or dive between the tectonic plates of North America and Eurasia.
  2. Geysir Geothermal Area: The Geysir geothermal area is home to a variety of hot springs and geysers, including the famous Strokkur geyser. Strokkur erupts every 5-10 minutes, shooting hot water and steam into the air, making it a must-see attraction.
  3. Gullfoss Waterfall: Gullfoss, or the “Golden Falls,” is one of Iceland’s most powerful and majestic waterfalls. The Hvítá River cascades in two stages, creating a dramatic and awe-inspiring natural spectacle. Be prepared to be awed by the sheer power of the falls.

These three main stops are the core of the Golden Circle, and they offer a diverse range of natural and historical wonders. In addition to these key attractions, there are several other interesting stops and opportunities for exploration along the way. The natural beauty and unique geological features of the area make the Golden Circle a must-visit for anyone traveling to Iceland. It’s a relatively short drive from Reykjavik, making it a convenient and accessible day trip for tourists.
