City Map Basse-Normandie France

Basse-Normandie, also known as Lower Normandy, is a former administrative region in northwestern France. It has since been merged into the larger region of Normandy as part of a 2016 administrative reorganization. The region of Basse-Normandie has a variety of natural resources that have historically played a significant role in its economy. Some of the notable natural resources in the area include:

  1. Agriculture: Basse-Normandie has fertile agricultural land, which has been traditionally used for the cultivation of cereals, vegetables, and fruits. Dairy farming is particularly important in the region, and it is known for its production of high-quality dairy products, including cheese, such as Camembert and Livarot.
  2. Fisheries: The region’s proximity to the English Channel and the Atlantic Ocean has made fishing a significant economic activity. Basse-Normandie’s coastal areas have supported the fishing industry for centuries, providing a variety of seafood, including fish, oysters, and mussels.
  3. Forests: The region is home to extensive forests, and the forestry industry has been an essential part of the economy. These forests provide timber for construction, paper production, and other wood-based industries.
  4. Minerals: Basse-Normandie has limited mineral resources compared to other regions in France, but there have been some mining activities for materials like limestone and gypsum.
  5. Renewable Energy: The region has also been investing in renewable energy sources, particularly wind and solar power. Wind farms can be found in some coastal areas, taking advantage of the region’s windy climate.
  6. Water Resources: Basse-Normandie has a network of rivers and water bodies, including the Seine River, which supports water-related activities and provides access to water for agricultural and industrial use.
  7. Tourism: The natural beauty of Basse-Normandie, including its coastline, beaches, and historical sites like Mont Saint-Michel, has made tourism a significant contributor to the region’s economy. The region’s natural resources, along with its cultural heritage, attract visitors from around the world.

It’s important to note that Basse-Normandie’s economic landscape and natural resource utilization have evolved over the years. While some of these resources remain important, the region has also diversified its economy to include other sectors such as manufacturing, services, and technology.
