Southampton is a city in the United Kingdom in the administrative region of England. The total number of residents in Southampton recently exceeded the mark of 246 thousand people. It is also worth considering that most of the urban population easily speaks English, so a language barrier will not arise in front of an English-speaking traveler.
The infrastructure of Southampton. Despite the low average Internet speed in the city, the user should have no difficulty finding a good connection. It is hardly worth going to Southampton in search of vibrant nightlife, discos or clubs since the choice of such establishments in the city is presented quite modestly. It should be noted that, in general, the crime rate in the city is low, but according to the popular opinion of tourists, in some areas, one should not lose vigilance.
Overall assessment of Southampton. Given the relatively high standard of living, Southampton can be a good place for a long-term stay.

One of the oldest and strategically important cities in England is Southampton, known since the time of the Romans. In the Middle Ages, this small settlement turned into the main southern port of the kingdom — the main flow of goods to France went through it. Either flourishing or falling into decline, by the 20th century Southampton had finally established itself in its role as a reference point of the southern borders of England. It was from Southampton that the famous Titanic set off on its tragically ended journey. Currently, it is one of the largest English ports and industrial centers.
There are not many historical attractions here, but those that have been preserved, as well as numerous theaters, museums, shopping centers and pubs annually attract "their" tourists to Southampton.

Southampton has its own airport, but it is so small that it accepts flights only from other cities in the United Kingdom and a very limited number of European countries, among which Russia is not. Therefore, the most convenient option would be a flight to one of the London airports. Trains and buses run from Heathrow (about 96 km) and Gatwick (about 130 km) to Southampton. As for renting a car, the advice here is the same for all English cities: if you plan a lot of trips around the country, it's worth thinking about, if Southampton is the main place of stay, then it's better to give up the car.
If you go directly from London, then the best option would be a bus - 1.5 hours from the main bus station in London — Victoria, and 7-10 GBP one way.

It is preferable to explore the city center on foot. At first glance it is not easy to determine where it starts and where it ends, but if you go from Bedford Place (this is in the northern part of the center) towards the coast, then you will definitely not get lost and get a lot of pleasure from walking.
If walking is too hard, you can move along the road by bike. There are several cycling routes in Southampton that can be found on the Internet and at special stands. They are not particularly well connected, but almost all lead to the center, so it is difficult to get lost. The terrain here is mostly flat, although there are hills in the Hampshire area.
For those who do not want to bother themselves, there is a developed network of bus routes, most of which start from the city center. Buses usually run at intervals of no more than 10 minutes.

Walking through the bustling center of Southampton between modern buildings, you suddenly come across a building clearly from past centuries - this is Bargate. Once the northern border of the city was located here, and the Bargate was the main gate through which daily trade caravans passed to the port. The Bargate is one of the few parts of the city wall that have survived to our times. Today this medieval building has been restored and given over to the gallery of modern art.
Southampton generally has a good selection of art galleries. In addition to the already mentioned Bargate Gallery, there is also the Millais Gallery, which houses temporary exhibitions of contemporary artists and designers. John Hansard Gallery - was opened in 1980 at the local university and combines modern painting and photography. The city Art Gallery exhibits more than 3,500 pieces of art created over the past 6 centuries.
