The town of Bend, located just 34 kilometers from Redmond Airport, is ideal for families and travelers who love outdoor activities. Bend is a city in Duties County, Oregon, USA. It is the main city of the statistically isolated area of Bend. Bend is the largest city in Central Oregon and, despite its most modest size, is the de facto capital of the region, due to the low population density of the area. At the time of the 2010 census, Bend had a population of 76,693, up from 52,029 residents at the 2000 census. The population of the city as of 2019 was estimated at 100,421 people. The population of Metro Bend was estimated at 197,488 as of July 16, 2019. It is the fifth-largest district in the state of Oregon.

Bend is located on the eastern edge of the Cascade Range along the Duties River. There the pine forest turns into a high desert, characterized by arid land, junipers, heather. Originally a crossing point on the river, settlement began in the early 1900s. Bend received the title of a city in 1903. From an economic point of view, it began as a logging village but is now considered a gateway for many outdoor sports, including mountain biking, fishing, jogging, rafting, rock climbing, paragliding, etc. In 2015, Men's Journal declared Bend City one of the "10 best places to live now."
History
The name "Bend" comes from the name "Farewell Bend," used by early pioneers to refer to the location along the Duties River where the town was eventually built, one of the few likely parking points along the river.
Until the winter of 1824, the Bend area was known only to Native Americans who hunted and fished there. That year, members of the fur party headed by Peter Skene Ogden visited the area. John C. Fremont, John Strong Newberry, and other army search parties came next. Then the pioneers, heading further west, passed through the area and crossed the Duties River at Farewell Bend.

The small Pilot Butte Development Company plant, built-in May 1901, became the first commercial sawmill in Bend. The original location was in the backyard of the Pilot Butte Inn. In 1903, Chand and Reed founded a small sawmill in Bend. It was on the Duties River just below the PionerPark area. The sawmill was operated using mill water wheels. A small community developed around a sawmill, and in 1904 there were already about 300 residents of the community. On January 4, 1904, the city held its first official meeting as a city municipality, a. H. Goodwillie was elected as the first mayor. Originally the settlement was called "Farewell Bend," later the name was shortened to "Bend."
In 1910, a reservoir was created, after the construction of the Bend Water dam, Light & Power Company on the Duties River in Bend. The dam provided the city with its own original source of electricity. The dam and power plant have been owned by Pacific Power since 1926 and still produce electricity, which supplies approximately 200 Bend households. In 1916, Duties County, Oregon was formed from the western half of Crook County and Band was designated the county seat. In 1929, Bend amended the charter and adopted a new administrative form of the city council.

Bend is located on the border of the eastern Cascades of Slopes and Foothills, ecoregion Level III designated by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) in the U.S. states of Oregon, Washington, and California, and the valley of the Duties River, ecoregion Level IV within the Blue Mountains Level III ecorefined, where the river.
Inside the city limits is the Pilot Butte State Scenic Viewpoint, an old fire tower. Bend is one of three cities in the continental United States that has a real active volcano within the city. You can get to it by U.S. Route 20. In the smaller known Bend area, the Horse Lava Tube System enters and borders the eastern edge of the city. South of Bend is the Newberry National Volcanic Monument on U.S. Route 97.

Climate
The climate of Bend is typical of a high desert with cool nights and sunny days classified as semi-desert. Annual precipitation is 11.2 inches, with an average annual snowfall of 23.8 inches. The winter season in Bend provides an average temperature of 31.1 °F in December. The temperature at night is not much lower than the daytime maximum during winter. According to the USDA Plant Endurance Zone map, the lowest night temperature is usually between − 5°F and − 10°F (Zone 6) annually.
Central Oregon is marked by very large fluctuations in daily temperatures, with an average July day temperature of 64.5 °F, and an average daytime temperature variation approaching 35 F-changes. Autumn usually brings warmer, drier days and cooler nights, and Bend is known for its annual "Indian summer."

The vegetation period of plants in the Bend region is short; according to the USDA National Resource Conservation Service, in half the years between 1971 and 2000, the USDA weather station in Bend recorded the last temperatures below the freezing point of water after July 3 and the first temperatures below the freezing point of water until August 31. Based on 1981 - 2010, the average window for zero temperatures is from September 13 to June 19.
