Amsterdam is the capital of the Netherlands and the largest city of this country, located in the north of the state at the mouth of the rivers Hey and Amstel. Its population is about 800 thousand people, of which only 40% are indigenous people, and 60% are immigrants. Together with suburban villages, Amsterdam is part of the Randstad agglomeration, which occupies the 6th largest place in Europe. The city is the cultural, financial and business center of the state. The headquarters of the world's largest companies, the main office of Greenpeace and the world's oldest stock exchange are located here.
The city of bridges, tulips and free love
Amsterdam has been famous for its hospitality and magnificent architecture for centuries. There are more than 90 channels with fresh water, over which over 1000 bridges are thrown. At night, they are illuminated by millions of small multicolored lanterns, from which the city acquires a unique fabulous look.
Since the entire territory of the city is located on marshy lands, the construction of huge skyscrapers or wide highways is simply impossible here, but this does not reduce the tourist attractiveness of Amsterdam at all. Cobbled narrow streets with huge beds of tulips, old buildings on high beams and an abundance of parks create their own unique atmosphere of comfort, friendliness and romanticism.
In general terms, the capital of the Netherlands can be described as a careful mixture of everything ultramodern with medieval. Here the old balustrades are harmoniously combined with the mirrored facades of buildings, museums are located on the same street with fashionable boutiques, and in minimalist cafes they sell strong beer made according to the recipes of ancient monks.
The city has always been and remains one of the most tolerant in Europe. In the so-called "coffee shops" you can legally smoke marijuana, and on the streets of the "Red Light district" you can see the priestesses of love displayed in the windows. By the way, a visit to the famous quarter is considered the "highlight" of a tourist walk in Amsterdam. Naturally, there are also traditional attractions in the city: museums, art galleries, churches, parks, squares and many monuments.
Amsterdam is the financial capital and jewelry paradise
The city occupies one of the first places in Europe in terms of the number of corporations and banks. The leading industries are mechanical engineering, oil refining, aircraft manufacturing and cutting of jewelry stones. The diamond factory is not only a source of income to the state treasury, but also a local landmark. Anyone can visit a small exhibition hall at the factory, and even see directly the process of cutting stones.
There are many light industry factories in Amsterdam, which provide half of the turnover of this industry in the state. Food production specializes in the processing of coffee, potatoes and brewing. Many manufactured goods are exported to other countries. The local port, designed for fast handling of bulk cargo, brings considerable income to the treasury.
Village of two fishermen
There are no written references to Amsterdam before 1275, but there is a legend among the indigenous inhabitants about its foundation. It tells that a long time ago, two fisherman friends with their faithful dog got into a strong storm. Fighting the elements, they survived, but their boat washed up on a deserted shore, where the Amstel River flows into the quiet bay of the Zuider See. The friends had no choice but to build themselves a hut and continue their lives.
Soon they were joined by their wives and relatives. To protect their village from the raging river, the residents erected a dam. The new village was named Amsteledame, which meant - the dam on the Amstel. But Amsterdam became the capital only in 1814 — at that time the city was already one of the largest in Europe, not inferior to such leaders as Paris or London.
