City of Cardiff
Cardiff is a city in the United Kingdom, the capital of Wales. Before the Marquis of Boot built a port here in the 1830s, at the dawn of the railway era, Cardiff was a small coastal town. Within a hundred years, it became the world's largest coal port. Powerful streams of coal flowed here from mines located in the northern valleys of Wales. Now the mines are closed, and there is a new life in Cardiff Bay. Currently, it is a recreation area with beautiful bars, restaurants, shops and luxury housing.

Attractions
The main attraction of the city is Cardiff Castle. This is an unusually extravagant structure of 1867-1875, erected by the third Marquis of Butsky on the ruins of a Norman fortress. The pride of the castle is an Arab room with an Islamic ornament made of marble, lapis lazuli and gold, made by specially invited Arab craftsmen, an indoor garden with a fountain.

In the city itself, in Cathays Park, it is worth seeing the lavishly decorated town hall with a dragon mounted on top of the dome, as well as the National Museum and Gallery of Wales (tel. 029-2039 7951, closed Mon.). Here you can get acquainted with an excellent collection of antiquities and an extensive collection of Impressionists.

On the outskirts of the city, in St. Fagans, visit the Museum of Welsh Life (tel. 029-2057 3500), where you will be told about ancient Welsh customs.

Cardiff Valleys
To the north of Cardiff lie the so-called valleys, where coal, iron and metals were mined until the 80s of the last century. To imagine the conditions in which the miners worked, visit the Big Mine Mining Museum in Blainavon, 43 km north of Cardiff, as well as the Ronta National Park in Trehavod, closed Mon. from Oct. to Easter). The former miners will show you first the above-the-shaft building, and then guide you through the narrow wet workings at a depth of 90 m underground.
