In 1164, Bologna became part of the Lombard League, which opposed Frederick Barbarossa. In the disputes that took place between the old Italian cities, Bologna has always been distinguished by its loyalty to the papal throne; In 1215, when the confrontation between the Guelphs (supporters of the popes) and the Gibbelins (supporters of the emperors) began, the inhabitants of Bologna bitterly fought with the Ghibellines. In the 13th century, Bologna became one of the 10 largest cities in Europe. At that time, about 50 thousand residents lived in the city.

Throughout the XV century in Bologna, there was a power struggle between two influential families - Bentivoglio and Ceneduli. In 1512, Julius II took possession of Bologna and annexed it again to the Roman possessions. In it, on the occasion of the conclusion of the Concordat of 1516, a meeting took place between Leo X and Francis I, and Charles V was solemnly crowned here in 1530 by Pope Clement VII, after he distributed various provinces of Italy to his allies.
