Delete repeated lines – have multiple complex profiles with overlapping lines. Laser cutter needs a single path, can be broken. Any possibilities? File included. : AdobeIllustrator

I’m cutting a map of the USA but the vector I started with has all the states outlined. When you delete an interior state like kansas, the map still shows the outline of Kansas because the adjacent states share a common boundary. I want to reduce the number of lines or delete repeated lines in such a way that all boundaries remain, but only as a single line. Here’s a link to the .ai file from dropbox. It’s simply a map of the USA. The ultimate test of success is if you ungroup the map and delete any single line, nothing is underneath it. I then export it as a .dxf and import it into my laser software, but it needs to be only one line deep. I’ve tried every variant of the path tool, merging up and down, simplifying, etc etc. I do this on multiple images so I need a way that’s better than manually going over every line. So here’s what I did and hopefully this will work for you and your laser – select everything and use the Unite function of the Pathfinder tool, then use the Outline function in the same area. It cut down the excess lines but I don’t know if you need the entire thing to be one continuous line. Hoping not! Tried and tried to find an answer to this before. I don’t think it exists. I’m pretty sure corel has something that works. It really stinks though because the laser then double cuts where it shouldn’t. I also use corel and I cannot get it to work. I had a friend work in Autocad and try to do it there, and we discovered that the original free vector map had state borders that weren’t exactly on top of each other. Even with a fuzz factor, it still wouldn’t delete them. Ended up doing it the manual way. Source.
